Update your G1 (HTC Dream) manually to Android 1.6

20 October, 2009 in the category android OS, english by .

For G1 users in europe who already have Cupcake (Android 1.5), this is the link for the update file:

http://android.clients.google.com/updates/kila_eu/signed-kila_eu-DRC92-from-CRC37.a7b90b4e.zip

UPDATE: for HTC Magic, the file is http://android.clients.google.com/updates/vfpioneer/signed-vfpioneer-DRC92-from-CRC1.6068d598.zip and the instructions are the same (yet I didn't test it).

Yesterday (october 19) T-Mobile started to distribute the update by OTA (over-the-air) update. So this is fresh :-)

UPDATE (40 days later): See http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=448 if you need anything else or experience problems.

Installation instructions (do it at your own risk):

  1. Rename the file to "update.zip"
  2. Copy the file on your phones SD card
  3. Power off your phone (and make sure it has some battery power)
  4. Hold the power and the home button at the same time, until a triangle with an exclamation mark shows up
  5. Press power and home button again
  6. Select the menu entry two "apply sdcard:update.zip" with the trackball or by [Alt+S]
  7. Wait patiently (about one or two minutes) until everything is installed and don't interrupt the process at this stage
  8. Don't be scared by the many "Deleting files...", this is normal
  9. Select the menu entry one "reboot system now" with the trackball or by [Home+Back]
  10. Enjoy your new Android 1.6 system!

Remember that I have tested this with a german T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream) which wasn't rooted. I don't know anything about other configurations but I think it's safe to give it a try, since my phone just refuses to install updates that are not suitable, and I tried some other manual updates before.

You can simply wait patiently until your Telco has distributed the update... (but that could take weeks!)

The most important feature for me is VPN, since I can access my university's WiFi now. The new market is nice, too.

I tried this with the Canadian HTC Dream.
Did not work. Said something about signature not found. Didn't harm the phone. Point to note; my build does not say CRC39? My build is 1.86.631.1 146733 CL#42949 release-keys

Yes, this is the EU-image, so probably you need the US-image. I googled this link for you: http://android.clients.google.com/updates/kila/signed-kila-DRC83-from-CRC1.c41b93c1.zip

please tell if it works for you.

I tried the EU-image and get
... Verifying Update Packe
E: No signature (297) files)
E:Verificationfailed
Installation aborted

I have a rooted G1 with the last jesus freke image. Any idea.
I rooted the G1 to get VPN running with eduroam. It works but I want to come to 1.6 ...

I have no idea what to do with rooted phones but I guess you can just install a custom ROM that is based on 1.6. This could take some time since Google said they would sue everyone who redistributes the Google Apps (Gmail, Maps, etc.), so the custom ROM developers have to exclude this.

A good place to look is this website:
